Student Behavior Charts

Even with the most consistent and effective management system in place, one student or maybe a few (yep, that happens to the best of us) face a challenge with behavior. Some students need a visual, interactive, step-by-step tool to help them be accountable for their actions.

I created a version of this behavior checklist my first year of teaching. I have made many revisions to this through-out the years. This is my 8th year teaching kindergarten and my 8th year using this tool. It has been an effective way to motivate my challenging students, monitor progress, document, and to build parent-teacher communication. Through my years teaching kindergarten, this is helped EVERY single child that was especially difficult. It also helped ME and the whole class gain some sanity in the day. Every parent that had a child who needed this chart, always had positive things to say about this. Parents have been grateful and felt that they were apart of the progress and process all together.

How do I use this behavior checklist?

I write the subject or activity that is to be completed on each line. Your student will earn a star or a minus for each subject. The description of how to earn a star is explained on the form. This is what you will want to go over with the student before you begin using this behavior chart.

You can set a goal of how many stars they need by the end of the day to earn a prize, time to play games/toys, or time with an adult. The key is to find what motivates your student. Dig into their interests and what they need. Do they seek attention from kids, adults, or you? Or maybe they REALLY love to build with legos or color? You decide if you know, ask their parents, or even let them be involved in picking their reward.
